Museum Shop
At the request of the museum the
sculptress Riet Koel - Hemmer has designed bronze
sculptures for the museum shop.
The cage porter
In order to trade the falcons they had to be transported
to the purchaser. The cage porter carried the falcons on
a rack, or on the back of his hand, as this was the best
way to transport them. In those days roads were poor,
irregular and full of holes and it was easier to balance
the birds on a rack. On a cart the birds became restless
and risked breaking their pens, so even large distances
were often travelled on foot to the sovereign courts.
This bronze statue commemorates the transportation of
the birds by the cage porter, on foot, across Europe for
nigh on four centuries.
The bronze statue is 26 cm high, weighs 2.65 kg and
costs €375 exclusive of shipping. Up to 200 statues
will be produced, after which the mould will be
destroyed. The statue comes with a certificate of
authenticity, in which the statue is detailed.
